A Multidisciplinary Second Opinion Clinic
A second opinion cancer clinic is a place where a newly diagnosed cancer patient can come to be seen by experts in the field. The patient’s case is presented to a multidisciplinary team—made up of a medical oncologist, surgical oncologist, radiation oncologist, radiologist, and pathologist—and the team makes recommendations to the patient and referring physician regarding a plan of treatment. The patient can also ask questions and discuss concerns.
Establishing such a clinic at St. Joseph’s is the goal of a team of doctors, Foundation board members, and hospital employees at St. Joseph’s and Barrow. The team hopes to raise $1.2 million for the Multidisciplinary Second Opinion Clinic at St. Joseph’s Comprehensive Cancer Center.
The Multidisciplinary Second Opinion Clinic would be a one-stop center that provides patients a thorough diagnosis and treatment plan, and that coordinates the patient’s care throughout the cancer journey. The Clinic would bring together cancer experts from throughout St. Joseph’s and Barrow to review a patient’s case, develop an integrated, multidisciplinary treatment plan, and coordinate implementation of the plan.
In one visit, a patient could meet with a team of cancer experts to discuss his or her case and learn about treatment options. The patient could ask questions and talk about concerns. By the end of the visit, the patient would leave with a plan, answers to questions, and greater confidence about the future.
