Honoring Sister Madonna Marie Bolton
We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Sister Madonna Marie Bolton, an exceptional and extraordinary healthcare leader.
For over 50 years, she dedicated her life to service, primarily as a compassionate nurse, healthcare innovator and devoted Sister of Mercy at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center. She spent many years dedicated to philanthropy at St. Joseph’s and was an endearing member of the St. Joseph’s Foundation.
Sister Madonna's presence at St. Joseph's was an immeasurable blessing, defined by her unwavering compassion, infectious humor, and progressive spirit. Her exceptional leadership and visionary dedication left an indelible mark on the hospital and the countless lives she touched.
Beyond her impactful roles as a pediatric nurse and leader, Sister Madonna was a true pioneer in the development of specialty care, particularly in oncology and hospice. Her foresight led her to study existing hospice programs in London, Montreal, and Connecticut, making her one of the earliest implementers of hospice care in the U.S.
Her profound empathy extended to a seriously ill young boy, whose wish to become a police officer she lovingly fulfilled – a compassionate act that remarkably predated and ultimately inspired the creation of the Make a Wish Foundation.
Her remarkable healthcare contributions were recognized in 2004 when The Phoenix Business Journal honored her as a Health Care Hero, a true testament to her enduring legacy.
Sister Madonna lived a life devoted to service, healing, and boundless love. While we mourn her loss, we celebrate the extraordinary impact she had on countless lives, both patients and colleagues. Her spirit will continue to guide our mission and live on in the hearts of all who were touched by her remarkable presence.

This historic chapel was built in 1955, only two years after the St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center was established, and is a cornerstone of our spiritual care.
